Obituary for Edna Lynn "Virginia" Walker

Edna “Virginia” Lynn Walker was born in Gretna, Nebraska to Walter and Nota Kneeland Lynn. She died at Spring Creek Assistant Living, where she was lovingly cared for by the staff and Legacy Hospice staff and volunteers.

The Lynn family moved to the West Coast and Virginia attended schools in Cannon Beach, OR; Forks, WA; Lopez Island, WA and Mt. Vernon, WA. She attended Seattle Pacific College for two years and had three years of nurses’ training at Swedish Hospital before enlisting in the US Army. Virginia was a nurse during WWII and made two trips to Manila on hospital ships that brought back wounded soldiers. After her discharge, she again attended college, this time at the University of Washington, receiving her BS in Nursing (1950).

Virginia was employed by the Yakima County Health District for 25 years and as a Head Start nurse for four years before retiring. She married for the first time at the age of 63, when she married Melvin A. Walker on June 19, 1982. Melvin and Virginia moved to Boise in 1998 and lived right next door to Melvin’s son and family. Melvin died in 2004 and Virginia remained in that home until June of this year.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Melvin Walker, her brother Willard Lynn and her sister Rosalie Albee. She is survived by her sister Patricia Bradley (Sid) of Clarkston, WA. She is also survived by her step-son and his wife Ellis and Mary Walker; Virginia’s granddaughters Jennifer Shiverick and Staci Thomas and their husbands Christian Shiverick and Jason Thomas. Virginia had five great-grandchildren: Cameron and Nicholas Shiverick and Kari, Samantha and Carson Thomas. She loved her great-grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play. Virginia had several nieces and nephews. Nieces Peggy Wallace and Nancy Goree came to visit and help Virginia several times while she lived in Boise.

Inurnment ceremony will be at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at 11:00AM. All arrangements are being handled by Summers Funeral Home.
